Data sources

Last updated September 28, 2026

Where the numbers come from

  • US company financials: companies’ own filings with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC EDGAR, XBRL financial data).
  • Market prices and international company data: Yahoo Finance, collected automatically. International figures are marked “beta” because we cannot check them against official filings.
  • Company list: the open-source FinanceDatabase project by Jeroen Bouma (MIT License), with one primary listing chosen per company.

How fresh it is

Closing prices refresh once a day, before the US market opens, so a page shows the previous trading day’s close, with its date. Fundamentals refreshed during a trading session also use the previous close, never a live price. Company fundamentals refresh on a weekly rotation. Scores are recalculated daily. For US companies, the financial figures come from the most recent annual and quarterly reports filed with the SEC; for other companies, from Yahoo Finance.

Limitations

Automated processing of filings can misread unusual reporting, and third-party data can be delayed or wrong. When too little data is reported, we leave a score blank rather than guess. See how we score for details, and please report errors to us.
